Lake of Bays, ON - Barry Worthington

My Watermark is Lake of Bays, Ontario.

I’ve been fishing pretty much my whole life, and I learned from my grandfather, and he swore me to secrecy, about how he would catch fish, and no one else would be able to catch fish. What he did is he got me to catch minnows and we cut them in half and we froze them. Then you put them on your hook the next day, frozen, and as they descend, they leave a scent. Now fish can smell better than they can see. He always came back with fish and we would always say “oh I guess we just got lucky!”.

My grandfather owned a cottage on Lake of Bays. I’ve gone back to look at his cottage, and it’s been bull-dozed and a multi-millionnaire has bought the property and put up a huge house that they call “the cottage”. But still the fishing is fabulous there because centuries ago there used to be a pier. The pier has since been destroyed, but all that’s left is the three rock beds, and if you want to catch huge bass, I can’t really tell you the exact location, but it’s in one of the bays, and if you find the rock beds, you’ll find HUGE bass that actually live there. They hide there.

That was the beginning of my youth in fishing.
