Lake Ontario, ON - Kay Plante
My Watermark is Lake Ontario.
Growing up beside the sea and by woodland lakes, it was my great good fortune to have exciting childhood adventures seaside and lakeside. These experiences fostered a deep connection to the water and a belief that everyone should have access to swimmable, drinkable, fishable water sources.
The last thirty years have found me beside Lake Ontario and more recently, my art practice has included support of Lake Ontario Waterkeeper efforts. Such a powerful water body - (indeed all the Great Lakes) - deserves our care and attention! It was the description in Joseph Boyden's writing, of a great lake as a 'sweet water sea', that captured my imagination and made me wonder if it was possible to return these magnificent lakes to the purity of pre-contact times. It is the vision of this possibility that leads me to work to help imagine a future where not only our Great Lakes, but all of earth's water sources could be restored and respected for the life-giving wellsprings that they are.
I applaud Lake Ontario Waterkeeper and SwimDrinkFish Canada for their amazing work on behalf of all citizens and hope that more and more people join in the efforts to preserve our precious water resource.
