Lake Huron, ON - Julie Bennet
My Watermark is Lake Huron, Ontario.
I’ve been going to Lake Huron as a kid, and for the last 53 years. My family has a cottage up in ‘Miles Bay’, and my grandparent’s originally owned it. It was built in the 30’s. It’s just a fantastic little bay, with a sandy beach, great fishing, and it’s always been a really safe place to go. It is really just an amazing place. My family has been going there for about 85-90 years. My mom just passed away, and my dad went a couple years ago, but I’m now going to buy the property.
The difference of when I was a kid, was my mums on the mouth of the river, it’s called, ‘Old Woman’s River.’ As a kid, we did everything on that river. We had a little 14 ft tin boat with a six-horse power on it, and we would water-ski on the river. It was always really fun. The water was quite deep when I was a kid. It was way over my head in the river, and now when I go up there, the water is only up to my ankles and my knees. So that makes me really sad. Still the Bay where the lake, on the mouth of the river, is fantastic. But you can see there that the water has dropped significantly, since I was a kid. I have been going there my whole life and over the 50 years, there’s been big changes up there.
