Bay of Fundy, NB - Kayla Hamelin
I feel connected with the Bay of Fundy because it was my first experience with the ocean. As a kid living on Georgian Bay in Ontario, I was always drawn to the water. I was thrilled to have the opportunity to visit the Atlantic coast with my family at age 10, and I remember finding myself on a wharf in Black's Harbour watching a recreational fisher accidentally pull up a sea star on their line. I had never seen such a weird and wonderful animal before and they allowed me to touch it. It was immediately clear - I was not in Kansas anymore! After catching the ferry from Black's Harbour to Grand Manan Island, the ocean adventures continued. I smelled the salty seaweed breeze, watched a playful porpoise "fishing" in a herring weir, and viewed majestic (and endangered) North Atlantic right whales from a whale watch vessel. Given the way that the ocean has shaped the rest of my life and my career, I think it's safe to say I was hooked for life!
