Lake Opeongo, ON - Zohar Berlyand
Lake Opeongo is the largest lake within the boundaries of Algonquin Park, a wild and beautiful landscape that feels like home in many ways. For me, the park and its thousands of lakes represent and remind me of the importance of water conservation. Lake Opeongo has been my access point to experiencing true wilderness close to home, in understanding the importance of protecting places such as this one and making sure others can continue discovering such natural wonders.
I cherish Algonquin Park and Lake Opeongo specifically because it was also the birthplace of Parkbus, the project I have been running for the past 6 years, providing sustainable transportation between Toronto and outdoor destinations such as Algonquin (where we started). It has opened up a whole new world of opportunities and I am feeling grateful for being able to share my passion for the outdoors with others who seek to access these places as well.
Each year I accompany hundreds of people, including many first time visitors, into the park. It never ceases to amaze me how so many of us feel the urge to spend time in nature, to hike those trails, smell the fresh air, look at the stars and paddle those waters.
