Jericho Beach, BC - Matei Costiuc

Every summer since I was 8, I went to a sailing camp at Jericho Beach called MacSailing with a friend. It was fun because I had no previous knowledge of sailing and that made the 5 day camp interesting. First year, I started sailing Optis which was fun as I learned nautical terms and how to operate the ships. The boats we sailed were like bathtubs with sails and rudders. Also, the boats had weird names like Sneezy or Sleepy or Happy. It was great fun to sail a boat with small leaks. The next year, we sailed Optis but with only 1 person per boat. I forgot everything about that year except that we found out about a boat called Tofu that went faster than the rest and that my main sheet (rope that holds the sail) broke off from the sail and my friend accelerated his ship (Tofu) to alert the instructors to help me.
The most recent year, we sailed bigger and speedier boats called Escapes and those needed 2 or 3 people to operate depending on the weather. That year was great in the way that I met 2 more friends from school and the boats could lean 45 degrees and go extremely fast.
My family still goes to Jericho beach today to walk along the shores and enjoy the wonderful view of English Bay right before the sun sets.
