Lake Huron, ON - Ross Buchanan
My Watermark is Lake Huron, Ontario.
My wife and I were trying to decide where we wanted to go for summer holidays. As a kid, I grew up going to Lake Muskoka as a family. But my wife is more from the Sarnia area, and she said, ‘Let’s go to Lake Huron, to the South Hampton!’ I said okay, and was trying to understand the difference between Lake Huron vs the Muskoka’s.
In Lake Huron, it was all about the water and the beach there. To me, the first time I went there, I fell in love with it. Just the water and the beach were so clean and fresh! Also, from a family stand point, it was just great! We’ve been going there every year now, for 8 years in a row, and it’s my place. It’s my place to relax, just being on the beach, in the water, while the sunsets —it’s just beautiful. We swim there everyday, twice a day. We go in the mornings, come back, have lunch, then we go back later in the day, and we swim again. Everyday is the same thing, as long as the weather is permitting.
The main difference between the Muskoka’s and Lake Huron was the beach. Just being able to walk in the water. In the Muskoka’s you have to have a cottage right on the water—where as with Lake Huron, you can have a cottage anywhere. It’s totally open access! You can rent a place up from the beach, it doesn’t have to be on the beach. It just feels like a community where everybody lives water, and enjoys the water together. You see families there year after year. I love Muskoka but it’s sort of your little place when you’re in Muskoka, whereas in South Hampton, the water is everybody’s! It’s something you get to share with everyone.
