Gullchuk Lake, BC - Michael Arbeider
My Watermark is Gullchuk Lake, BC.
As my field crew leader bent over and leaned into his paddle and the wind, I knelt in the stern of the canoe and quickly looked at my GPS using the light of my headlamp to make sure our bearing was OK.
It was not!
We had pummelled our way through the gusts only to have gone over 500 meters off-course! Of course, this did not discourage us, as we knew beneath us were sockeye salmon fry and in the trees around us were Western Screech-owls. Being immersed in that kind of nature is always worth the extra distance put on by clumsy detours. We canoed that lake on Denny Island multiple times during our surveys there, and it always proved to be a pleasure.
